stilwerk – behind this term lies much more than just a shopping centre. When the Hamburg entrepreneur Bernhard Garbe completed the first stilwerk in Hamburg in 1996, this did not simply mean the opening of a property – it was rather the starting signal for the implementation of a visionary concept: a high-class brand offering that represented innovation, modernity, the future, cooperation and lifestyle was to unite under one roof. The customer could expect an outstanding variety on the subject of furnishing, coupled with the best quality and competent advice, which could not be found anywhere else until now. The vision of that time was successful and today, in addition to Hamburg, the stilwerk Berlin, opened in 1999, and the stilwerk Düsseldorf, founded in 2000, are part of the brand cosmos.

An important component of the stilwerk concept is the architecture: here, no stereotypical standard is required, but sensitively designed individuality. Hamburg’s stilwerk is located in a listed brick building, a former malting factory, the history of which dates back to the 17th century. With the conversion to stilwerk, which is in keeping with the requirements of historical monuments, the outer façade and many historical elements of the malthouse have been preserved and old and new harmonize in a special way.
The stilwerk houses in Berlin and Düsseldorf are both modern. In Berlin, the nose-shaped façade at the corner of Kant-strasse and Uhlandstrasse is particularly striking and is also striking from a distance as an urban planning focal point. Studio & Partners from Milan and Novotny Mähner & Associates are responsible for the construction. stilwerk Düsseldorf is also known as the “House with Heaven”: The building, designed by sop Architekten (formerly J.S.K. Architekten) with an elliptical ground plan, rises over five floors and ends at a height of 32 metres in a glass roof that can be opened. Inside, galleries in both locations are grouped around a spacious atrium that reveals the view upwards across all floors.
